HAPPY Memorial Day

When I picked out my photos for today’s post, I forgot that it would be my pre-Memorial Day post. So, it’s not as patriotic an outfit as I would have otherwise picked, but at least I am sporting some navy, with hints of red and white.

I’m not sure yet what I’m going to do this Memorial Day weekend, but I do know that I will celebrate it with gratitude and JOY. I’ve said it before, but I think it bears repeating. Yes, Memorial Day is a day to remember those who gave their lives for all of us. But, why did they die? Did they die so that we would be sad once a year when we think about them? Or, did they die so that we could continue to enjoy life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

I believe it’s the latter, and I’m quite confident that if the men and women who sacrificed everything could be here, they would tell us to enjoy our pools and barbecues and baseball games. Having known my fair share of military members, I can’t imagine any of them wanting their friends and family to be somber. Rather, I think they want them to live the full life that they fight every day to preserve.  Even more so, those who’ve sacrificed everything for our freedom and for the “American dream” are those who, I think, would most want us to celebrate all the wonderful things that being an American means.

So, please don’t forget why we’re celebrating this weekend. The brave men and women who have passed on deserve our deepest respect and thanks. But, they also deserve recognition in the most American way possible – by enjoying the life they died to protect.

Sunday Best

Christ is risen! He is risen, indeed!

Happy Easter, y’all! I hope everyone had a beautiful Sunday celebrating one of my most favorite holidays.

This Easter weekend was a little rough for me, but what better holiday to have a rough weekend before than Easter? It is so full of joy, and hope, and expectation. And brunch and pretty dresses! No matter what’s going on in your life, it’s pretty hard not to have your spirits lifted on Easter.

And, it DID NOT RAIN in Nashville for Easter. This is remarkable for two reasons: 1) it rains all the time here. 2) Rain was forecasted all day. You never know the miracles that will occur on this blessed day.

I’m posting this picture with my friend Hannah because although it’s a little grainy for some reason, it was taken much earlier in the day and is therefore a much better picture of me than the official outfit picture below. So, keep this one in your mind, and then proceed with caution and a forgiving eye.

I debated off-the-shoulder for church. Is that appropriate? I still don’t know. But, I figured since it wasn’t a LOW off-the-shoulder, I had my hair down, and most of the time I was wearing a choir robe, I could get away with it. Judge if you must. But, I know you can’t/won’t judge me for the florals – or at least, you shouldn’t, because I gave a very clear disclaimer that I am obsessed!

I usually love to look out in the congregation at church on Easter and see all the pretty colors, but I sort of forgot this year. Plus, I did notice a lot of white being represented. Even my own dress is more neutral than the usual bright yellow or coral I tend to be drawn to for Easter.

So, since I didn’t pay attention to people’s outfits at church, show me yours! Did you buy something new specific for the occasion, or recycle an old faithful?

Whatever you wore, I hope it was a beautiful day.

NYE 2017

Well, we have arrived in 2017, y’all! I’m excited for the new year, as I am every January. I don’t have anything in particular that I know will happen this year – but I have hopes for lots of good things!

One of those good things is to grow this little blog of mine. I love it so much, and I’ve heard from many of you who read it, that you love it, too. (Thank you for that!)

To that end, I’ve launched a new Instagram account, dedicated solely to all things fashion. I’ve long thought hashtagging my way to a wider audience was the best method of growth for me, but I didn’t want to annoy other friends who aren’t as interested in that aspect of my life.

Now, I don’t have to worry about irritating those people, while I can also focus on meeting more insta friends who share my interests!

So, if you’re in the not-likely-to-be-annoyed category (as you probably are, if you’re reading this), please feel free to add me: Tastefully Trendy. Should be pretty easy to remember.

Now, to the matter at hand. New Year’s Eve! In my adult life, NYE has become one of my favorite holidays – in part, because it is such an optimistic night. In full reality, because I get to wear sequins.

This year, I couldn’t find ANYTHING shiny in stores. I guess I waited too late and all the sparkles sold out. So, I was forced to wear one of the three sequin skirts I already owned…and I actually was very pleased with the result.

dsc_0029-2Off-the-shoulder: check. Choker: check. Cute furry hot pink clutch (that’s actually an Ipsy makeup bag): check. And of course, sequins and shiny shoes: check and check!!

Here’s a close-up of the off-the-shoulder detail (and my makeup! My secret is great highlighter and NYX’s matte setting spray!).

1-nye-off-the-shoulderAnd the rest of the outfit (sans ring, because I forgot to take a picture of that).

1-nye-sequinsSadly, one of those cute pearl earrings were a casualty of the evening. I somehow still had the back, but the pearl itself was nowhere to be seen (insert sobbing emoji). Oh well. On a happier note, can we talk about how good my new camera is? I mean, look at those silver shoes sparkle!

Did you all have a good New Year’s Eve? Any fun plans? My party was Y2K themed, so you know it was amazing. I hope yours was, too, and that it sparkled and shined with all the magic and promise of a new year! Send me your outfit pictures – I’d love to see your shimmer!

2016 Rewind

Well, I’ve basically taken the month of December off of this little blog, but don’t you worry – I’ve been thinking of ways to grow it, and I’m excited about 2017!  (Please note, I think I say this every year, but I mean it this time. Really!)

I’ll talk more about all of that when we actually get to 2017, but as we wind down this crazy year (frankly, I’ve had a fantastic year, but I’ll be respectful of those who hated 2016 and not rub it in), I thought it would be fun to do a little year-end review of Tastefully Trendy.

Thanks to Google Analytics, I know that y’all really like when I wax inspirational, particularly when I talked about entitlement and being content in any circumstances, and when I reflected on God’s faithfulness to me over my first 6 months in Nashville.

You also really like stories about my dating life. My awkward dating proposition to my chiropractor came in as my 2nd most read post of the year, and my woeful tale of the Bradley Cooper look alike that I almost dated apparently made quite a lot of people feel sorry for me (incidentally, he and I started talking again. And he read that post…  But, those are stories for another time.).

As far as strictly fashion posts were concern, this maxi skirt won the day, and is one of my favorite pictures I’ve ever taken of myself. I billed it as such, which might be part of the reason it was so popular.

1 - blue blouse maxi skirtYou all celebrated my first day of work at the Country Music Hall of Fame, and allowed me to be one more voice in the post-election chatter, which really, might have been the biggest grace of all.

So, thank you, friends for such a great year in my little blog world. It means so much to me that you share in my life in this way, and all of your encouragements, kind words, laughs, and “likes” on facebook brighten my day every time.  Here is to a fantastic 2017 for all of us, filled with more successful dating experiences than awkward ones, inspirational words and events, and, of course, great fashion! <3

And just for fun, here are a few more outfits from the year that I just really liked.

My killer 80’s party look:

1 - sequin skirt, blanket scarfI combined black and yellow and DIDN’T HATE IT!!

1 - black and yellowBad camera, great outfit (and makeup, TBH).

1 - chambray and sequinsOh, and I was on TV one time. That was cool.

Happy New Year, y’all! Let’s make it a great one!

The Tooth Fairy

Happy Halloween, y’all! I’ve become a big fan of Halloween in my old age. There are many reasons for this:

1) Seeing cute kids costumes on social media is the highlight of my year.

2) Halloween really kicks off the holiday season, with Thanksgiving only 3-4 weeks away, and then Christmas!

3) I LOVE COSTUMES!!!

I may have said this before, but honestly, if I could dress up in costume at least once a month, I’d be a happy camper. As it is, I get one day a year, plus a couple themed parties if I’m lucky. So, I take full advantage of it.

This year’s costume was inspired by Pinterest (per usual) and I put my own spin on this fantastic tooth fairy look:

tooth-fairy-inspoby recycling my tulle skirt from Cinderella 2 years ago:

wpid-photogrid_1414253311902.jpgI thought making the tulle skirt was the extent of my craftiness, but I ramped it up a notch this year, buying my first ever glue gun! I’ll be honest, guys, I was pretty afraid to use this new tool. But, it’s remarkably easy. Like, SUPER easy. And I didn’t even burn myself once.

So, with my new crafting skills, a couple pinterest photos for inspiration, and some spare time, I turned a dollar store crown and wand into something fit for the elegant tooth fairy I was becoming. My wings were also from the dollar store, the toothbrushes for my crown from Big Lots (I spent about 6 dollars total on them), and the shirt from a cheap store in the mall (a back-up, because I broke my cardinal rule about buying things online and ordered a shirt from China….maybe I’ll have it by next Halloween).  So, altogether, I spent less than $20 and had a super fun costume that got rave reviews from children and their mothers alike.

Also, of the 4 other tooth fairies I saw, my costume was the best, if I do say so myself.

1-tooth-fairyDid you dress up this year? Or did your kids? What’s your favorite costume that you have ever worn or seen? Do you purchase your costumes, or are you a DIY-er like me (side note: Halloween is oddly the one time of year I try to be crafty. The rest of the year, I figure I can support the economy by paying other people to make things).

Be safe everyone, and send me cute costume pictures!

Who Runs the World?

Another year, another patriotic holiday, another wearing of my favorite tank top. I paid about $30 for this shirt, which, for me, is basically an astronomical price for something that doesn’t even have sleeves. But, I’ve worn and loved it so much, I’ve definitely gotten my money’s worth.

Whenever Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day roll around, I enjoy celebrating and reflecting. However, I  never quite know what to say that doesn’t sound trite – especially on Memorial Day when those who I would thank are already gone.

So, although my social media accounts did not reflect my gratitude yesterday, to all those who paid the ultimate price for our freedom, we remember and honor you. And we celebrate in the way that you would want us to – with laughter, loved ones, good food, and freedom.

And tank tops that remind everyone that America is the greatest – because of those brave men and women who made it so.

P.S. Forgive the poor lighting in this picture. I guess I need to find more than one spot to take pictures if I’m going to take them at inconsistent times.

P.P.S. If you don’t understand the shirt, please don’t tell me. My history teacher heart can’t bear it.

Easter Finery

Happy Easter, everyone! I hope you all enjoyed a joyful day celebrating the resurrection of Jesus! Easter has become one of my favorite holidays over the past few years. It is just such a happy day: good food, spring weather, friends and family, relatively little commercialism, bright colors – and genuine happiness because Jesus didn’t stay dead but rose again to save us all. What could be more worth celebrating?

Plus…Easter is an excuse to get a pretty new dress. As if I needed one – an excuse, or a new dress. This year, though, after much searching through stacks of polyester dresses (honestly, why is that fabric even in existence anymore), I came away empty handed. Almost.

My thought process while shopping is a bit all over the place and evolves as I walk. On Friday, I painted my nails yellow, in expectation that whatever I wore for Easter would have some yellow in it. So, when I found some white dresses, I immediately envisioned yellow accents, which led me to the shoe section in search of yellow heels.

Yellow heels were not to be found, but instead, these beautiful Steve Madden soft-pastel floral sandals cried out to me, begging to be bought. Naturally, I had to oblige, and although they wouldn’t match my yellow nails, I could still imagine how pretty they’d look with the white lace dresses I’d seen in the previous store.

So, back to TJ Maxx I went to try on about 5 white lace dresses…none of which were flattering for various reasons. C’est la vie. I still had my pretty shoes, though, and knew I could build something around them, and of course, the off-white dress I already owned was perfectly suitable.

I did miss getting my Easter dress this year, but I’m sure my bank account is fine with it, and no one at my new church knew the difference. And I kinda like this Easter shoes thing…maybe a new tradition?

Birthday Suit 2.0

While we’re on the subject of my birthday, I went out and celebrated the weekend before with a friend. Because I’m obsessed with the honky tonks in downtown Nashville, she was a good sport and tagged along. Now, sequins don’t quite fit the cowboy boots theme of Nashville. But, it’s my party, I can wear what I want to.

Of course, it was freezing outside, though, and downtown Nashville is a walking experience. So, I through on a blanket(ish) scarf and called it a day.  For those wondering, I was still cold. But, who remembers that when they have a great outfit to reflect on?
1 - sequin skirt, blanket scarfDon’t judge me that my tree was still up in mid-January…it was a busy time for me.

How do you like my sequins with plaid scarf combo? Too high-low or just enough mixing of styles to work?

Birthday Suit

A million years ago, I had a birthday (okay, it was 2 months ago, but it seems like forever), and on my birthday, I like to wear something fun, pretty, and feminine – regardless of the fact that my birthday is in mid-January and therefore usually frigid.

This year, I wore my go-to purple satin-y skirt (seriously, that was a very good impulse buy. I get so much wear out of that pretty little skirt!), and a cute sheer floral top, with my gold Cinderella shoes (I call them Cinderella because I wore them in a Cinderella photo shoot. Obviously.).

1 - purple skirt, floral topWas I overdressed for an all-day orientation at my new job? Yes… Was I completely satisfied with my decision anyway? Absolutely.

NYE and Chill(y)

So, new plan: next time I’m debating warmth vs. cuteness, I will choose warmth. 100 percent of the time, every time.

I ended up being pretty pleased with my outfit, although I bitterly missed my sequins. But, if it had not been for my friend’s wisdom in bringing hand warmers, which I put inside my boots, I would have been MISERABLE, and probably writing this short a few toes.  Seriously.

Fortunately, most of the other people there had also learned this lesson.  While we did see the occasional 21 year old girl in a short skirt with no tights, for the most part, everyone was very practical in their attire, and no one would have cared had I been bundled up like a snowman.

So, here’s what I chose:

1 - NYE leather and blanket scarf

Again, not as cute in the photo as in real life, in part because you can’t see the details on my jacket.  But, it’s a pretty lavender leather with an asymmetrical ruffle, and underneath I wore a short-sleeve gray sweatshirt.  All of it coordinated well with my new blanket scarf (okay, I learned that a true blanket scarf is a square, so this is actually just a giant, thick, fake-wool rectangle scarf), and my small-floral patterned jeans. Underneath, I wore knee-high socks, with my tall boots.  Oh, and gloves not pictured.  Yet, still I froze.

All in all, it was a fun evening – I always like concerts and being in downtown Nashville.  But, I think for the sake of my appendages and sequins, I’ll go to an indoor party next year.

I hope all of you had a lovely NYE, full of sequins or at least warm enough weather to keep all of your toes. Show me what you ended up wearing – I’ll take notes for next year!
