Preds Pride!

I need to learn hockey lingo, because y’all, Nashville is a hockey town, and our Predators are on fire!

I freely admit that I am a bandwagon fan. In my defense, though, I’ve never followed a hockey team before, except the US in the Olympics, and I think it’s perfectly acceptable to jump on the bandwagon of your home-town team.

So, disclaimer out of the way, since my boys are in the final games of the Western Conference Finals – just one or two steps away from the Stanley Cup games! – I figured I should go buy a t-shirt. Since I waited until the Western Conference Finals, though, the choices were a little limited…

After striking out at Target and one Walmart, I headed to a 2nd Walmart and ended up in the kids section. While I don’t normally like how kids’ shirts fit, since I am not, you know, a 14 year old boy…I did like the $12.88 price tag. And, I liked it even better when I got to the checkout counter and it rang up as $1!

I asked twice if that was the correct price, because honestly, even on clearance, how could it be one dollar? But, it was, and so for that, I could make anything work.

And, make it work I did by cutting a v-neck into the shirt to give it a more modern, feminine, less little boy look, and pairing it with striped pants and a jacket because I wanted to show my (newfound) pride at work. I swapped out the jacket and pants for shorts later, when I went to watch the game in the park, surrounded by 1000s of my closest friends. And food trucks, because this is Nashville!

Unfortunately, we lost that game in overtime, but it was a great evening nevertheless, and I’m sure this $1 purchase will be used many times over in the coming days/weeks and future seasons.

And now with the jacket…
Go Preds! Pluck the Ducks! Smashville! (That’s all I’ve got…)

Closet A-Blaze

If you follow me on my Tastefully Trendy instagram account, you know I went through an unfortunate period in January where I had a bad cold that required me not to wear eye makeup for about a week. I felt very exposed. And very young – maybe that part wasn’t so bad.

This is one of the outfits from that period. As I talked about last week, I’ve really been lacking in creativity lately, so I can’t afford to not post a look because I’m a little vain about the #nomakeup thing. So, look through a soft filter…

Yesterday, I went through my closet, in hopes of a giant purge. While I did find some things to get rid of, I also rediscovered all of my cute blazers. When I worked at a law school, I wore blazers all the time. But, working for a non-profit and in music, I kinda fell out of the habit. Now that I’m in a more professional dress environment again, and since I’m in a fashion rut, anyway, I’m going to try to reincorporate these into my wardrobe – hopefully I can breathe new life into some of these old staples.

This camel blazer, though, has not been forgotten at all. As you might notice if you scroll back far enough, it’s been on major repeat this winter.

I’m kinda thinking that I might do more of the blazer with a t-shirt and jeans thing in this new phase of my life. Still on-trend and very Nashville, but incorporating the pieces I already own. We’ll see how the Spirit moves me.

Do you wear blazers often? What’s your favorite way to style them? I definitely need inspiration, so if you have ideas, please throw them my way!

My Favorite Things (rn)

I’m not going to lie, this jacket is on major repeat this winter. It’s just so multi-purpose. It makes casual outfits more professional, professional outfits more wearable, and it’s wool and I’ve been freezing for two weeks straight.

So, if you follow me on Instagram, you’ve already seen it once this week…oh well. Hashtag real life.

dsc_0022There’s just something about a camel blazer that is so universally classic. I dig it. And this skirt, because I’ve also worn it a million times recently – occasionally with less static, but again, #reallife.1-camel-blazer-wool-skirtDo you have pieces you’re basically living in this winter? What’s seen the most play from your wardrobe?

Creative Professional

So, here it is, January 13, and I still have my Christmas tree up. I at least unplugged my lights so my neighbors wouldn’t think I was crazy, but y’all – I have just not had any time to take it down!  At least I did take a few ornaments off today, so maybe with the long weekend, there’s hope.

But, I say all that just to say, get used to seeing my tree, as I’m not only catching up on life, but also my blog posts.  We very well may be seeing that tree into March.  Sorry…

I wore this outfit a few weeks ago when I went in to fill out some paperwork for a subbing job I never actually got to do (I’m glad about full-time work, of course, but I do really enjoy subbing).  Anyway, I’d already been offered the position, but I still wanted to look professional.  So, I danced on the line by wearing bright colored pants with an elastic ankle (does anyone know what this style is called?) and a tribal patterned top, toned down by a conservative navy blazer and gray patent (and mock croc) pumps.
1 - tribal print, green pantsHow are you doing on life in 2016?  Generally, I am really enjoying this year, but I’m just so far behind!  Have you at least gotten around to taking down the Christmas tree?  Sometime soon, I’ll write a reflection on 2015 that will be inspirational and poignant…or something.  But, it may actually come closer to 2017…we’ll see.  Let me know how things are in your world!

Patterns “off” Fleek

Sometimes when I have extra time on my hands, I try to get creative with my outfits.  Sometimes it works…sometimes it doesn’t.

I think this outfit mostly works, but I’m not a huge fan of the tights.  I love patterned tights in theory, so I always buy them on clearance at Target. But, in reality, I think they look funny on me.  Maybe I just don’t know what to wear them with.  Maybe you have to have chicken legs to pull them off.  I don’t know.  Otherwise, though, I like how this outfit came together.  It would be good for a trendy date.  I actually wore it to meet a friend for Mexican food.  Whatever.
1 - romper patterned tightsWhat do you think about patterned tights?  Only for the 12 year olds among us, or do you have some tips on how to better pull them off?  Obviously, I need the input, so please share!  And, have a great weekend!

Onefer Tuesday: Army Pink

Guys, I’m running a little low on outfits to show you.  I guess when you don’t shower each day until about 4, and then just put on clothes to meet your bestie for dinner, there’s not a huge incentive to pick out something really cute.  Plus, all my photography space is currently taken over by boxes.

I should be good for a little while longer, but I want to set the expectations up front that Two-fer Tuesdays might be suspended for a bit, starting now.

I really liked this outfit.  I think it evolved from the boot socks – I bought a zillion of them a couple weeks ago at Target, but I realized once I got them home I’m not totally sure how to wear them.  The tall ones are easier, though (there aren’t a whole lot of options), and I like the tan with the army green.  Of course, to show them off properly, I had to wear a skirt (I suppose REALLY skinny jeans might have worked, but remember, this is me we’re talking about), and I just went from there.  I also like the contrast of the feminine details of the dress and pink accessories with the more edgy look of the boots and socks.

1 - white dress, blazer, tall bootsWhat do you think of this pseudo-professional look?  Do you like the style mixing, or do you prefer sticking with all feminine or all edgy?  Regardless, aren’t these socks the cutest?  Have you tried boot socks yet – how do you wear them?  I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Blazers and Rompers

Sometime this week, I’ve got some exciting news to share with you all!  I guess I say that as a teaser, which is pretty annoying now that I think about it.  But, check back and I’ll eventually spill the beans.

In the meantime, here is an outfit I wore recently on a date.  Believe it or not, every once in a while, I do get a date with a non-inmate in Georgia.  However, since his Muslim best friend had been kicked out of the family for getting his Hindu stripper girlfriend pregnant and both of them were now living with him, this guy and I were still not a really good match.

As is often the case in my dating life, there was no second date.  Of course, I was fine with that for a number of reasons, but I can’t help but still feel a little rejection.  I know why I didn’t want to go out with you again, but why didn’t you want to go out with me?

I guess I’ll never know, but I’m pretty sure it wasn’t the outfit, because this is one of my new favorites (that honestly I may never wear again because I like being original with my date attire).  But, it’s cute, right?

A great way to transition some summer clothes into fall is to add a jacket.  It keeps you warm, obviously, but also tones down the summery feel, in this case, of my coral, lace romper.  I don’t have a ton of fall dresses – most of mine are very obviously summer, or wool – so, the romper was a playful alternative.

1 - lace romper, blazerWhat do you think about my date night look?  A win or a definite reason he never asked me out again?  And do you feel a little bad too when someone you didn’t like doesn’t ask you out again, or is that an issue I just personally need to work on?  Let’s talk dating lives, cute outfits, guesses at my surprise news…anything you want to share, I’m all ears!

Totally Tan

Today’s Instagram style challenge prompt was Totally Tan, and this one did make me think a little.  Tan is not a color I wear often (mostly because I think it’s pretty boring…), but I did manage to find some khaki shorts and seersucker (both of which have very limited lives left this year), and pulled together a look that didn’t bore me after all.  (Also, sorry about the t-shirt, guys.  At least you were warned!)

1 - Totally TanI’ve noticed I’ve been wearing flats a lot more lately.  I think this is a summer thing – when I’m wearing shorts to work (or for running around), I don’t really like to OVER-emphasize my legs with heels.  Plus, I work in a more casual environment, as you know, and sometimes I get teased for my heels.  So, I just wanted to assure you that I still love them, in case you were getting worried.  Heels will always be my first love in footwear.  Well, maybe 2nd to bows.

TBT: Barry Manilow

Y’all, I won Mother’s Day this year.  My mom has been a life-long Barry Manilow fan, and when I saw he was coming just 30 minutes from me for his last tour EVER!!!! (supposedly), I snagged us a couple of tickets and we went a couple weeks ago.

I must admit, I had low expectations for Barry.  The guy is pretty old, and many aging singers don’t quite sound the same.  But, he really sounded great and came across very sweet and humble.  I genuinely enjoyed it.

Knowing you will be the youngest person in an entire arena is quite liberating – I could kinda wear whatever I want.  And I did.  I’ve had this sequin skirt in my closet for months and hadn’t found an opportunity to wear it.  But, I figured the flash of Barry would allow for my sequins.  So, I tamed it a little with the blazer, and a lot with the flats (I didn’t want to look like I was going to a post-work cocktail party), and was ready to go.
1 - rainbow sequin skirt, flatsMy mom and I had a great time.  And you can obviously see where my love for dressing in patriotic colors come from.
1 - mom and meWhat would you wear to see Barry Manilow…you know, if you were going to see Barry Manilow.  Do you think my choice was appropriate, or not-really-but-no-one-paid-any-attention-to-me-so-what-does-it-matter? And didn’t I luck out in the gene pool?! Let me know your thoughts!

Two-for-Tuesday on steroids

Today I thought it would be fun to do another two-for-Tuesday, mixing and matching a couple of pieces to see two completely different ways to wear an item.  But, I discovered that I’ve been wearing a lot of the same articles over and over.  So, today is actually a three-for-Tuesday.  I had hoped for this to be an infinity blog – where each outfit seamlessly transitions to the next for all eternity (or at least, the length of this post) – but there is a broken link that I would need one more outfit to fix.  Blogging goals.

First up, one of my favorite blouses from Old Navy, dressed up with a pleated skirt and jewelry courtesy of Rahab’s Rope.  I was at a work event, so whenever I do those, I try to display as much of our company’s products as possible; it’s a great sales technique (you can by these or similar pieces here).  I also just really love my plaid cherry shoes with this polka dot blouse.  Subtle print mixing at its finest.
1 - button down, pleated skirtNext, I remixed this blouse on a casual day with some Target super acid-washed jeans, and my favorite RocketDog heels (which I recently said goodbye to. Tear.)  They lived a good life. Of course, it’s not TOO casual, since I’m wearing heels and dangly earrings, but the outfit definitely has a completely different feel from the outfit above.
1 - dressed up, button downAnd lastly are my jeans recycled with a graphic tee, and given a menswear spin with my boxy blazer and oxford saddle shoes. I want to embrace this menswear trend, but I feel weird every time I do it.  Maybe I should just accept that I can’t conquer every fashion trend that comes along, no matter how hard I try.
1 - graphic tee, blazerHow do you think I did?  Three distinct looks, or would you call me out on wearing the same clothes multiple times in a week (for the record, these three outfits were not all worn in the same week).  How about menswear – do you like, love it, absolutely hate it?  What’s your favorite piece to wear over and over?
