Sunday Best

Christ is risen! He is risen, indeed!

Happy Easter, y’all! I hope everyone had a beautiful Sunday celebrating one of my most favorite holidays.

This Easter weekend was a little rough for me, but what better holiday to have a rough weekend before than Easter? It is so full of joy, and hope, and expectation. And brunch and pretty dresses! No matter what’s going on in your life, it’s pretty hard not to have your spirits lifted on Easter.

And, it DID NOT RAIN in Nashville for Easter. This is remarkable for two reasons: 1) it rains all the time here. 2) Rain was forecasted all day. You never know the miracles that will occur on this blessed day.

I’m posting this picture with my friend Hannah because although it’s a little grainy for some reason, it was taken much earlier in the day and is therefore a much better picture of me than the official outfit picture below. So, keep this one in your mind, and then proceed with caution and a forgiving eye.

I debated off-the-shoulder for church. Is that appropriate? I still don’t know. But, I figured since it wasn’t a LOW off-the-shoulder, I had my hair down, and most of the time I was wearing a choir robe, I could get away with it. Judge if you must. But, I know you can’t/won’t judge me for the florals – or at least, you shouldn’t, because I gave a very clear disclaimer that I am obsessed!

I usually love to look out in the congregation at church on Easter and see all the pretty colors, but I sort of forgot this year. Plus, I did notice a lot of white being represented. Even my own dress is more neutral than the usual bright yellow or coral I tend to be drawn to for Easter.

So, since I didn’t pay attention to people’s outfits at church, show me yours! Did you buy something new specific for the occasion, or recycle an old faithful?

Whatever you wore, I hope it was a beautiful day.

J’adore Paris

Happy Friday, y’all! Look at that – I made it through a full week with regular blogs! I consider this a significant accomplishment, and one that I hope I can maintain.

Pretty much all of my wardrobe these days is from Target and Old Navy. Maybe that’s why I’m feeling stifled – as cute as those two stores’ clothes can be, I might need to branch out a little.

Until then, here is an outfit brought to you by both of my favorites. My Target jeans are a familiar staple, but the shirt from Old Navy is new. I almost paid full price for it, too, which is a ridiculous thing to do at Old Navy where they have a new sale every two days. But, graphic tees tend to sell out so quickly, and I’m pretty picky about what my t-shirts say, so I felt I needed to snap it up.

Cute, right? I was a French major, so a pun on the Eiffel tower is right up my alley (if the middle print is too small to read, it says, “Eiffel in love with Paris.”) J’adore.

Fortunately for me, Old Navy was having a 40% off everything if you use your Old Navy card. Fortunately for Old Navy, that was enough incentive for me to open one. I figured I shop there enough it’d be worth it for the sales. And, I’ve already earned $30 in Old Navy points or whatever, just by using it outside of their brand one time…so, hopefully the potential negative to my credit score will pay off. Just don’t tell Dave Ramsey.

Here’s the full, casual outfit. Honestly, probably not the most flattering shirt I own, but sometimes, you have to go with what makes you happy (including a twisted choker that bugs me, but I obviously can’t do anything about it now).

Do you have any graphic tees that you really like? What do they say? And what are the stores that you just can’t stay away from – do they define your style like Target and Old Navy have begun to do for me, or are they your favorites for another reason?

Have a great weekend, friends!

Berry Kiss

One of my favorite trends right now is dark lipstick. I’m not bold enough to go REALLY dark (yet, anyway), and I might be too fair to pull it off without looking total vintage goth. But I’m really into a good berry – especially when it matches my shirt PERFECTLY.

This outfit is a great example of how to take something really casual – a t-shirt (that I wear all the time, btw, because it is so comfortable!) and jeans – and spice it up a little with very minimal effort. All I did was add a scarf (tied at the ends to make it a faux infinity scarf) and a choker, some booties, and I was chic and on-trend, but comfortable enough to run errands or whatever else.

1-butterfly-scarf-choker-polka-dot-jeansAlso, not pictured are my earrings because, well, I forgot to take a picture of them.

Do you like to dress up your casual wear? What are some of your go-to outfit boosters?

(Oh, and total bonus points if you know what movie this post’s title is taken from!)

Greenery

I tend to wear colors in phases. Earlier this year, I couldn’t get enough peach/soft coral. A summer or two ago, I was all about the hot pink. Burgundy/wine is still riding high in my esteem. But, lately, I’ve really been feeling green – particularly, rich greens, like forest or emerald.

Imagine my smugness, then, when I learned that Pantone has declared “Greenery” as the 2017 color of the year. While that spring green shade isn’t my favorite, I felt very ahead of the trend by already deciding I needed more green in my wardrobe. (Please note: this decision might have been influenced by the greens already beginning to creep into stores. I think this is a chicken/egg argument, and I’m maintaining that I was ahead of the curve.)

Here is one of my favorite recent green purchases – an off-the-shoulder top. Of course.

off-the-shoulder-green

I like to call the full outfit, “how many trends can I wear at once?” How many do you see (it’s like one of those games from Highlights magazine when we were kids)?

1-off-the-shoulder-greenAlso, my dad calls these the shoes that every woman owns. I don’t know why he says that. Do you own shoes like these? My dad is not usually on the cutting edge of fashion, but maybe he’s discovered something I haven’t. Please weigh in on the great shoe debate, and have a happy weekend!

Totally Turtleneck?

If you follow me on my new/additional Instagram account (Tastefully Trendy!), then you probably know I’m doing a style challenge again! I’ve done these in the past, and they’re a great way to stretch my creative muscles, as well as to meet other fashion lovers.

Today’s prompt is Totally Turtleneck, which was tricky for me, since I don’t a) wear turtlenecks, or b)have anything with turtles on it…  So, I’m choosing to focus on the “neck” part, and wear an outfit that has a lot happening around my neck.

dsc_0011I’ve talked a lot (probably ad nauseum, at this point) about my love for chokers. Well, one of my favorite things about the current version of the trend is layering. Whether I combine it with a longer necklace(s), or add a scarf as pictured here, my choker usually has a friend. I’ve never been what you might call a minimalist…so this trend works out great for me. 1-blanket-scarf-and-chokerHow do you feel about layering your chokers? Is too much of a good thing, a good thing, or are you of the less-is-more camp? Also, how would you interpret “Totally Turtleneck”? Am I the only short-necked person not wearing these??

NYE 2017

Well, we have arrived in 2017, y’all! I’m excited for the new year, as I am every January. I don’t have anything in particular that I know will happen this year – but I have hopes for lots of good things!

One of those good things is to grow this little blog of mine. I love it so much, and I’ve heard from many of you who read it, that you love it, too. (Thank you for that!)

To that end, I’ve launched a new Instagram account, dedicated solely to all things fashion. I’ve long thought hashtagging my way to a wider audience was the best method of growth for me, but I didn’t want to annoy other friends who aren’t as interested in that aspect of my life.

Now, I don’t have to worry about irritating those people, while I can also focus on meeting more insta friends who share my interests!

So, if you’re in the not-likely-to-be-annoyed category (as you probably are, if you’re reading this), please feel free to add me: Tastefully Trendy. Should be pretty easy to remember.

Now, to the matter at hand. New Year’s Eve! In my adult life, NYE has become one of my favorite holidays – in part, because it is such an optimistic night. In full reality, because I get to wear sequins.

This year, I couldn’t find ANYTHING shiny in stores. I guess I waited too late and all the sparkles sold out. So, I was forced to wear one of the three sequin skirts I already owned…and I actually was very pleased with the result.

dsc_0029-2Off-the-shoulder: check. Choker: check. Cute furry hot pink clutch (that’s actually an Ipsy makeup bag): check. And of course, sequins and shiny shoes: check and check!!

Here’s a close-up of the off-the-shoulder detail (and my makeup! My secret is great highlighter and NYX’s matte setting spray!).

1-nye-off-the-shoulderAnd the rest of the outfit (sans ring, because I forgot to take a picture of that).

1-nye-sequinsSadly, one of those cute pearl earrings were a casualty of the evening. I somehow still had the back, but the pearl itself was nowhere to be seen (insert sobbing emoji). Oh well. On a happier note, can we talk about how good my new camera is? I mean, look at those silver shoes sparkle!

Did you all have a good New Year’s Eve? Any fun plans? My party was Y2K themed, so you know it was amazing. I hope yours was, too, and that it sparkled and shined with all the magic and promise of a new year! Send me your outfit pictures – I’d love to see your shimmer!

Black Friday Haul

This past week, one of my best friends came to visit for Thanksgiving, and we had a great time, exploring Nashville, Black Friday shopping, EATING…

I took advantage of having a friend who I wouldn’t be embarrassed to make take pictures of me – and made her take pictures of me. Unfortunately, for a couple of these outfits, I forgot to do my accessory pictures, too, so here are outfits without the detail close-ups. Sorry!

Also, it should be noted that almost everything I’m wearing in these two pictures are Black Friday deals. I’m not one of those people who have things with tags on them in my closet. I buy it. And I wear it – immediately.

off-the-shoulder-and-floral-pantsThe highest-price thing I’m wearing in the outfit above is my shoes, which were about $20. The shirt was $7.50, the most expensive thing I bought at Old Navy that day, where I also got my pants for a whopping $4.50! It was an exciting day.

I was hesitant about the off-the-shoulder look for a while. Whenever I’d see it on someone, I thought it just looked so trendy that it was too basic. But, now that it’s been out a little while, there are some more variations on the theme, and I really like this forest green take on the boho look.

Naturally, both of these looks feature chokers. But, you all know I also love a good romper! So, when I found one I could wear in winter, I couldn’t NOT buy it (also, it was only $15, so clearly, it was meant to be). I added tights and booties and I had a simple, sophisticated evening look.

winter-romperWhat were your best Black Friday finds? Were you good at actually buying for other people, or like me every Black Friday, did you mostly just scoop up deals for yourself? It’s so hard to resist!

My Tribe

I told y’all last week that I am currently obsessed with chokers. And I did not lie. I only have them in black right now, which is probably a good thing because if I had other colors, I might wear them EVERY. SINGLE. DAY.

I’m not sure that the choker in this outfit adds a whole lot, especially since the rest of my outfit is brown. But, it’s cute, so I went with it.

Not much else to say about this that I haven’t already said – chokers are back, and I love it. Shirts tied at the waist are back, and I love it. Tribal prints are probably about on their way out, but I still love it. And the cold(er) weather is here, bringing with it tights and boots – and I love it!

1-denim-shirt-tribal-skirtAre there any trends that you refuse to let go of, even if you know they’re on their way out? Or, maybe they’ve long passed an you just don’t care – fashion is all open to interpretation, anyway! Share your favorites!

Getting Choked Up

I debated mixing in some of my older good-camera outfits with these phone camera pictures, but I thought we’d just rip the band-aid off and get them all out of the way now. That way, whenever I do get my new good camera, we can just have all good outfits, not marred by this embarrassing photography.

My favorite trend right now is chokers, and its one that I was scared of trying when they first came back around. First of all, the last time these were in style, I was 13, and I really didn’t wear them much then. Second of all, my neck is kinda short and I was afraid they’d cut me off weird.

But, I was happy to discover that with an open neckline, and a choker of just a modest width, I could actually pull these off quite well. My middle-school self would be so proud.

Since I discovered I could wear them, I’ve fully embraced the trend and wear one several times a week. I especially like layering them with other necklaces, which, although not demonstrated in my outfit below, is the modern spin on the old trend. I think they look a little edgy, which might be part of the reason I like them. But, they also make me feel like Cinderella, let’s be honest.

cinderella-choker-necklaceSo, here’s to the choker, even if it makes me feel super old that styles I distinctly remember wearing are already back for their 2nd go-round.

1-pink-leather-trendWhat styles from your childhood have you seen come back around – that you’re either happy about, or wish had stayed in your childhood?
