Self-Care: Part 1 – The Importance of Self-Care

In relaunching my blog, there were bound to be some bumps in the road. First up: I’m not yet back in the habit of taking intentional pictures of my outfits (nor of waking up early enough to do so). However, I did get my camera and tripod out, charged the battery, and found my SD card, so we’re definitely making some progress.

In the meantime, here is another mirror selfie. I wore this outfit to see Bobby Bones’ comedy show on Saturday. Essentially, I just took myself on a date. After reading last week’s post, a very thoughtful and generous friend gave me the ticket, and I drove myself, sat by myself, and bought myself a drink. I really didn’t need to dress up to impress myself, but that’s never stopped me before. On a related note, did I wear neon orange to draw Bobby’s attention? Yes. 100 percent. Did it work? Not at all.

Nevertheless, thank you to my friend for the ticket – it was so very appreciated. And if my writing ever inspires any of the rest of you to give me things, please know that you are more than welcome to do so.

On my last post, my friend Sarah asked if I would talk about some of my self-care routines. First of all, thank you, Sarah, for the suggestion. I love when a friend recommends a new topic! Second of all, yes, I think self-care is a natural extension of my blog, as really, fashion is a part of taking care of yourself. Almost every contestant ever on What Not to Wear was someone who “was so busy taking care of other people, she didn’t have time to worry about herself.” (Side note: my friends and I used to spend significant amounts of time day dreaming about how to make ourselves look shabby enough for an extended period of time to qualify for the $5,000 shopping spree in New York with Stacey and Clinton. We never got very far.)

The point is, when you look good, you feel good, which impacts your confidence and overall demeanor. This affects, in turn, how other people perceive and receive you. So, while fashion may seem unimportant in the grand scheme of things – and, compared to starving children or drug trafficking, perhaps it is – it certainly has its place of significance in our lives.

Of course, fashion is just one part of self-care, and over the next few weeks, we’ll look at some different aspects. For now, though, this post is long enough, and I have reached the stage of life where I use 5 different products on my face every night, so I need to start the long nocturnal process. Please let me know if you have any other topics you’d like me to discuss – on self-care, or otherwise – and have a great week!

<3,

Don’t Call It a Comeback

Hey, y’all, it’s been a while!

I have had a stressful couple of months. Many of you may know that I teach online part-time, and whenever I’m teaching a course, the life kinda gets sucked out of me. In fact, this course was so stressful, I had two nightmares about it.

Couple that with a few other things that were weighing on my mind, not sleeping great because of said nightmares/stressors, and being tired of all of my winter clothes, and I’ve just had no creativity left to give.

And, if I’m being honest, guys, I’m a little discouraged about my blog. I really enjoy it, and I am so grateful to all of you who have read it – whether for a long time or who have just recently started.  But, I don’t know how to grow it, and I don’t know how to take great pictures. And, I compare myself to so many other bloggers who apparently have professional photographers as spouses, or at least have beautiful back yards in which to take their pictures. Or, even more discouraging, have worse pictures than me (and in my opinion, since I’m being honest and vulnerable here, not as cute clothes), but way more readers/followers/sponsors, etc.

I realize we’re not supposed to compare ourselves. It steals your joy and all of that. But, in the cut-throat world of fashion blogging, it’s pretty hard not to. (I’m just kidding about the cut-throat part. Most of the fashion bloggers I actually “know” (aka, we follow each other on Instagram) are quite lovely.)

All of that to say, I’m having a bit of a blog identity crisis, and I don’t know exactly what’s going to happen. But, I’m not quite ready to give up. Also, I just paid to renew my domain, so I’ve at least got to get my money’s worth on that. So, if I seem a little off my game over the next few weeks (months?), please forgive me. I’m trying to re-find my blogging self.

And, if you feel so led to offer any words of advice or encouragement, please know that the floor is always open.

For now, here’s an outfit I wore a long time ago, but honestly, I wear these pants about once a week, so it very well could have been something I wore yesterday. If you ever find orange pants in the clearance section at Target, do not hesitate for one second. You will not regret your purchase, I promise!

Orange you glad I’m buying a new camera?

Y’all are gonna have to put up with my blog pictures for a few weeks. I might have mentioned that my camera bit the dust, but I’ve decided it’s not worth trying to fix. So, I gave using my phone camera a go, and while it does accomplish the basic purpose of recording what I’m wearing…it leaves much to be desired, particularly where colors are concerned. Also, I don’t know why it is more unforgiving then a regular camera – or why cameras capture things differently than what my eye sees, in general (no one need bother explaining it to me. I’m okay in my unscientific ignorance).

Regardless, I’m going to by myself a new camera, probably on Black Friday, so this temporary horrid-picture phase should be over soon, I hope – for all of our sakes. However, I do think I’m going to buy a baby-DSLR camera, so we’re just assuming I can figure out how to use it. Fingers crossed!

Here is a super cute outfit, made much less so by my camera situation. But, imagine these pants are my favorite orange ones you’ve seen a million times, and the shirt is a pretty peach that perfectly matches the peach and orange shades in one of my favorite winter scarves – and then you’ll have an idea of how this outfit actually looked.

1-orange-pants-peach-shirtThanks for sticking with me, friends, and have a good Monday!

Halloween Colors

This outfit is definitely out of season now, guys, but I just wanted to write a quick-post, and since orange is at least a Halloween color, I hoped you might forgive the anachronism.

But it is super cute, right?

1-orange-pants-and-tankSpeaking of Halloween, what’s everyone going to be this year? If you follow me on Instagram, you may have already figured out my costume. If you don’t, then you’re welcome to add me! tastefullytrendysb. I’m pumped about it – just have to figure out where I’m going to wear it. Ha!

Halloween colors are pretty much the worst, but orange has become one of my favorites, and I guess because my brother went to Clemson, I can’t even hate on the orange and purple combo. But, let’s all promise not to look like witches in orange or purple and black – okay?

Baby’s First Review!

One of my good friends from Virginia Beach has recently started selling Arbonne, the skin, beauty, and healthy-living products with which many of you are probably familiar. Normally when I hear someone is selling something, I RUN the other way. I’ve had too many experiences where potential-friends have turned into actually-just-salespeople, and where real-life friends became consumed with hocking their wares. Or people I’ve not talked to in years are suddenly sending me facebook messages inviting me to parties in states I left over a decade ago.

But, Joyce is a good friend that I trust – and knew long before she started selling anything – so, when she asked me to review some Arbonne products on my blog, I was happy to help.

Joyce sent me some tea from Arbonne, a couple fizzy drink add-ins, and most exciting, a sample of the full RE9 Advanced Skincare line. One of the things I really like about this line is the convenience. Order everything at one time, and you’ve got a full line of morning and evening products to take out the thinking (I’m definitely a routine person; I don’t like to have to think about something as mundane as washing my face).

The set includes cleanser, toner, a serum, eye cream, and day/night moisturizers – 5 steps to better skin! Most of them have a delightful creamsicle scent. I can’t use the full-line; it wasn’t quite the right fit for my skin. However, the cleanser is HANDS DOWN the most thorough cleanser I’ve ever used. I wear two kinds of mascara, and taking it off at the end of the night is an impossible task that, even with eye makeup remover, leaves my washrags permanently stained. This stuff made eye makeup remover superfluous and left my skin so clean and refreshed.

Arbonne boasts natural ingredients, which I didn’t research enough to comment on. But, if you like a full no-thinking routine, it might be a great fit for you. Or, if you like a very thorough clean, the RE9 cleanser might be just what you’re looking for. Or, if you just like creamsicles. Regardless, Joyce would be glad to help you find the best products for you at www.joycereddinger.arbonne.com.

If you sell something you’d like me to review, please feel free to send me a sample or something, and I’d be glad to try it. But, keep in mind, that I might not buy your product myself because I’m cheap. And please don’t try to befriend me solely to get me to buy/sell something. That’s just rude.

Now, here is my own version of a (now out-of-season) creamsicle. Have a good Monday, y’all!

Twofer Tuesday: The Kimono

One of my favorite pieces in my closet right now is my multi-colored kimono. There are certain types of clothing I’m very particular about: maxi dresses, yoga pants, floral rompers… I’m picky about patterns and color combinations – and about looking too generic. Kimonos are another one of those items. Despite how trendy they are, I only own one because I’ve only ever seen one I thought was worthy of purchase. But, what a good purchase it was!

Below I’ve styled it two different ways. The first is a business casual look, appropriate for most offices, I’d say. The second is an outfit I wore to church which was decidedly inappropriate…but, I wear a long, shapeless green choir robe on Sunday mornings, so I push the envelope with what goes underneath.

How do you feel about kimonos? Would you wear one this bold? What’s your favorite way to style them? I’d love to hear your ideas!

Don’t DIY

First of all, I’m kinda obsessed with these cropped orange/tomato red/I-don’t-actually-know-what-to-call-this-color pants of mine. You can’t really wear orange pants every day because people would notice, but it’s quite tempting.

Second, I love the scallop detailing on this blouse. It’s one of my yard sale finds from a few weeks ago, that I’m pretty sure I paid $2 for. Worth it.

However, whether it was because the top was previously worn, or whether it’s just cheap, or whether my washing machine eats buttons, I’m not sure…but, for whatever reason, the buttons on the back of the blouse (there are about 4 from the neck to mid-back) have popped off. Because I’m not very domestic and sewing takes a long time, I fixed them with safety pins and glue. That was fine until I went to my chiropractor and he made fun of me (I didn’t realize you could tell my shoddy DIY job when I was lying down. Standing up it was fine, I swear!). So…I guess that’ll teach me to cut corners.

I also learned that day not to ask out your chiropractor, but that’s a story for another time.

1 - orange cropped pants, scalloped topSorry my hair is in my face in this picture. I had another where I looked a little less like a 1930s pin-up girl, but my lipstick in this picture is so on-point! It is straight-up orange lipstick that I bought because it was on clearance at Target and I’m a sucker. But, I actually really love it!

Have you ever had a DIY job go terribly wrong – or terribly right? What are your biggest victories and failures, fashion or otherwise? I’d love to hear your stories! Have a great weekend, everyone!

Maxi-mizing Time

Hey guys! How’s it been going the last month or so? A lot has happened in my life – most not exciting (I had strep throat – who knew adults got that), some possibly exciting (voice lessons?!?). Regardless, I’ve missed you all!

The next few weeks look like a dream, though. I am not teaching right now, and I have no visitors staying with me for the foreseeable future…  It’s like I have a new lease on life! This weekend I took two naps. I don’t even know what to do with myself (what I should be doing is laundry and paying bills, but that’s besides the point).

I’m going to try to get creative with my outfits while I have all this time. As you might observe over the next few posts, I’ve fallen into my usual rut of wearing a few favorites and neglecting the other 80% of my wardrobe. Wish me luck!

This outfit, though, is one that I created a few weeks ago and love, so it might be a frequent repeat. Also, this is possibly my favorite picture I’ve ever taken of myself, which was a pleasant surprise when I uploaded these pictures.

1 - blue blouse maxi skirtHope you’ve all been doing great! Oh, and p.s., while I’ve enjoyed my naps this weekend, I really do love having visitors, so don’t let my candor dissuade you from coming to Nashville!!

It’s a Crazy Town

On Monday, I teased a major announcement coming to the blog. In hindsight, I might have made this seem a bigger deal for you all than it actually is, but when have you ever known me not to  be dramatic?  While the announcement is big to me, it honestly won’t probably affect most of you in any way.  Nevertheless, since you’re all my friends and I like to keep you informed of my life, with no further ado…

I’m moving to Nashville!

Yes, that’s right.  Soon, I’ll be living in the land of barbecue, country music, and hipsters. So, if you see my style evolve (again), at least you’ll know why – I’ll probably have to trade in my puffy vests for floppy hats, but we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.

Also, I may now wear a little more orange – you know, Peyton Manning’s school and all.

There are quite a few reasons for this move, which I won’t elaborate on at this point.  Suffice it to say, I’d been praying about this door for a long time (like 4 years long time), and I’m so excited that God has opened it!  (I don’t have a job lined up yet, though, so if you hear of anything, please let me know!)

I’ll probably share more over the next few weeks about God’s faithfulness, but for now, I hope you’re encouraged that God cares about what we care about, and while I did have to pray for 4 years, He didn’t forget me and gave me this particular desire of my heart.

Oh, and moving date is October 25…”Hollywood with a touch of twang” is about to grow by one more petite blonde.  I hope they’re ready!

Twofer Tuesday: Spotted Out and About

How convenient that the one prompt I had two outfits for happened to fall on a Tuesday – let Twofer Tuesday continue!

I’ve never been a big animal print person, so I don’t have a ton of choices for “Spotted Out and About.”  However, my mom recently gave me these pants that I actually really like.  At first, I wasn’t so sure…cropped, tan. cheetah print.  From Belk.  But, after trying them on, I thought they were cute, and with the right combinations, can seem more modern than mom (I really wanted just wanted to use alliteration there).
1 - spotted out and about 2As you can tell from the picture below, I wore this outfit a few weeks ago.  Goodbye, floral wedges.  I’ll be counting the days til I see you again.
1 - spotted out and aboutHow do you feel about animal print?  Chic or cheap (see, there’s that alliteration again!)?  Which of these variations do you like best? (I think my vote is on the yellow top, but I can’t quite decide.)  Any thoughts on mom pants from Belk?  Let’s talk about it!
