TBT: Puffy Vests

I’m thinking about starting a new feature on the ol’ blog – Throwback Thursdays.  Of course, I realize this is not actually that original.  #TBT has been a thing as long as we’ve been calling the pound sign a hashtag (I’m guessing), but as I was cleaning out some of my pictures, I realized there are quite a few outfits I’ve never blogged.  At this point, they’re either going to go unblogged altogether, or they’ll have to wait until a year from now when the clothes are back in season, and you’ll totally be able to tell that it’s an old picture – both by my hair color/length, and by my Georgia backgrounds.

So, in that spirit, here is an outfit I wore sometime last winter/early spring – don’t you just feel colder looking at it?  I was really quite proud of myself for this one.  I don’t know why a sweater under a puffy vest seemed so ingenious at the time, but the whole combo turned out pretty cute, if I do say so myself.  Except for the statement necklace, it looks like I actually might be going to do something outside!

Unfortunately, I learned when I was in Nashville in January last year that the preppy puffy vest is not nearly as popular with the hipster crowd in Tennessee as it is with the old stock Southerners of North Georgia.  So, my style may have to evolve some in my new home.

1 - TBT puffy vestHow about where you live – are puffy vests celebrated or scorned?  Have you broken yours out for the season – or your tall boots, for that matter?  Will you be okay if I post TBT pictures of shorts in November?  I want to hear your thoughts!

The Puffy Vest Rut

I’ve fallen into a bit of a rut lately, recycling the same pieces over and over (short-sleeved gray sweater, check; fleece-lined leggings, check; puffy vests, check). I am always in favor of mixing and matching, but I feel like I’ve taken it to a bit of an extreme. I think I’m so over the cold that whenever I get up in the morning, I’m just automatically drawn to whatever I think will keep me warmest; unfortunately, I haven’t invested in as many sub-zero pieces as I apparently should have (you live in Georgia, they said.  It’s hot there, they said).

So, hopefully this never-ending winter will, in fact, soon end, and I can start rotating between the other 9/10ths of my closet, and stop with these same 4 or 5 pieces.  In the meantime, here is my other puffy vest (you may remember the blue and white one that is so popular among the 60+ set).  I’ve had it for several years (it was a great Christmas gift from my brother many years ago), and while I’m wearing it a little more often than I’d like, I am glad to now be getting some good use out of it.

And, let’s talk about my jeans.  I LOVE the wash on these.  It’s so unexpected; white, without actually being white.  I got them at Target, using the Target Cartwheel app (if you haven’t downloaded this app yet, you need to do it ASAP.  Free coupons; I bought these with 20% off all clearance apparel!  You will thank me, I assure you.).

Very Pinteresting

I read an article a few weeks ago about a lady who spent 30 days living according to Pinterest’s Most Popular page – an interesting concept that maybe some time I’ll try when I’m a little bored or short on blog topics.

But, my favorite part of her article was when she was talking about clothing.  She said all the Pinterest outfits were so cute, but when she tried them, she felt like she was wearing SO MANY CLOTHES!  I started thinking about it, and that’s really true.  Trendy Pinterest outfits really are all about the layers.  So, I decided to create my own version of a Pinterest outfit, and see how many layers I could put on my body without looking absurd.

1 - pinterest outfitOn top, we have a shirt, a vest, and a scarf – so, three.  If I’d wanted to really go crazy, I could have added a statement necklace, but the scarf was just a little too blousy for that.  On bottom, I have jeans, boot socks, and then boots, of course.  If I were basic, I would not have worn my cowboy boots – they’re not really the ideal boot sock boots.  But, I’m not and I prefer a little variation in my looks, so I wore what I wanted.

The one thing I’m doing here that’s not very Pinterest-y is wearing a simple gold cuff.  Pinterest girls would have multiple bangles, a watch, and who knows what else going on.  But for my real life, the cuff was much more practical.

So what do you think?  Pinterest worthy, or not enough layers?  Would you wear an outfit like this – what spins would you put on it?

(Oh, and side note, my puffy vest – which I love – is from Belk.  If you snag one, you can match me and the two senior citizens I’ve seen wearing the exact same one…)
