Two-fer Tuesday: Jailhouse Stripes

It’s been a while since I’ve done a twofer Tuesday, but no time like the present!

I really like these jailhouse stripes (or maybe more accurately, train conductor – they’re probably too narrow for jailhouse). Regardless, I think these highwaisted, cropped striped jeans are the best.

However, I wasn’t sure about them when I bought them, because in the artificial light of the dressing room, they really played with your eyes. I mean, in general, I try to wear clothes that don’t make people want to look the other way.

In the natural light, though, they seem to be okay, so I think I’m good. Except the camera doesn’t love them, either…you might have to zoom in pretty close to get an accurate look. Oh well.

In this first look, I’m combining another one of my favorite spring trends – off-the-shoulder – with my cute pants and some flats that actually hurt my feet more than most of the heels I own, but they’re so cute and universally functional, that I keep them. I ran some errands on Saturday in this outfit, then popped on some black heels for dinner with a friend that night.

Oh, and let’s not forget to mention my pink lipstick; as much as I enjoyed the dark berrys and browns this winter, I’m seriously so happy bright is back in season!

Next up is another casual outfit (I did wear it to work, but in hindsight, it might have been TOO casual). Anyway, a simple soft turquoise tee (you’ll have to take my word for it being that color, I guess), with a black scarf (I don’t have a cat; that’s all just my hair…) and some silver accents to complete the look. Easy, but still put together. Scarves are helpful in that way.
So there you have it – the return of Twofer Tuesday, thanks to my new favorite cropped jeans.

Which of these looks would you rather wear? And what’s the verdict on these stripes – delightful or dizzying? Let’s talk!

Berry Kiss

One of my favorite trends right now is dark lipstick. I’m not bold enough to go REALLY dark (yet, anyway), and I might be too fair to pull it off without looking total vintage goth. But I’m really into a good berry – especially when it matches my shirt PERFECTLY.

This outfit is a great example of how to take something really casual – a t-shirt (that I wear all the time, btw, because it is so comfortable!) and jeans – and spice it up a little with very minimal effort. All I did was add a scarf (tied at the ends to make it a faux infinity scarf) and a choker, some booties, and I was chic and on-trend, but comfortable enough to run errands or whatever else.

Do you like to dress up your casual wear? What are some of your go-to outfit boosters?

(Oh, and total bonus points if you know what movie this post’s title is taken from!)

Totally Turtleneck?

If you follow me on my new/additional Instagram account (Tastefully Trendy!), then you probably know I’m doing a style challenge again! I’ve done these in the past, and they’re a great way to stretch my creative muscles, as well as to meet other fashion lovers.

Today’s prompt is Totally Turtleneck, which was tricky for me, since I don’t a) wear turtlenecks, or b)have anything with turtles on it…  So, I’m choosing to focus on the “neck” part, and wear an outfit that has a lot happening around my neck.

dsc_0011I’ve talked a lot (probably ad nauseum, at this point) about my love for chokers. Well, one of my favorite things about the current version of the trend is layering. Whether I combine it with a longer necklace(s), or add a scarf as pictured here, my choker usually has a friend. I’ve never been what you might call a minimalist…so this trend works out great for me. 1-blanket-scarf-and-chokerHow do you feel about layering your chokers? Is too much of a good thing, a good thing, or are you of the less-is-more camp? Also, how would you interpret “Totally Turtleneck”? Am I the only short-necked person not wearing these??

Just Peachy

I know we’re all busy today, shopping, making cookies, decorating for cookies, and obviously watching the Gilmore Girls revival!!

So, in the interest of all of our time, I thought I’d post just a quick thing today with few words. I really liked this outfit – partly because I’m obsessed with my two peach shirts and basically just alternate between them every day (slight exaggeration), and partly because yellow and peach is an unexpected color combination that works so well here because of the other colors in the scarf.
1-yellow-scarf-peach-shirtI hope you all had a lovely Thanksgiving, and that you find some great deals today, with minimal hassle.  Or just stay home and enjoy a peaceful day with your loved ones. Have a great weekend, everyone!

Orange you glad I’m buying a new camera?

Y’all are gonna have to put up with my blog pictures for a few weeks. I might have mentioned that my camera bit the dust, but I’ve decided it’s not worth trying to fix. So, I gave using my phone camera a go, and while it does accomplish the basic purpose of recording what I’m wearing…it leaves much to be desired, particularly where colors are concerned. Also, I don’t know why it is more unforgiving then a regular camera – or why cameras capture things differently than what my eye sees, in general (no one need bother explaining it to me. I’m okay in my unscientific ignorance).

Regardless, I’m going to by myself a new camera, probably on Black Friday, so this temporary horrid-picture phase should be over soon, I hope – for all of our sakes. However, I do think I’m going to buy a baby-DSLR camera, so we’re just assuming I can figure out how to use it. Fingers crossed!

Here is a super cute outfit, made much less so by my camera situation. But, imagine these pants are my favorite orange ones you’ve seen a million times, and the shirt is a pretty peach that perfectly matches the peach and orange shades in one of my favorite winter scarves – and then you’ll have an idea of how this outfit actually looked.

1-orange-pants-peach-shirtThanks for sticking with me, friends, and have a good Monday!

Mix and Match: Paisley and Stripes

We’ll talk next week about what I decided (am still deciding) to wear for tonight’s party.  In the meantime, here’s an outfit I wore a couple months ago.  I really love mixing patterned scarves with different prints – I think they’re an easy way to incorporate the mixed-print trend if you’re a little uncomfortable with it and don’t want to look like you’re trying to hard. This paisley scarf has the same colors as my t-shirt and striped sweater, so everything blended well without “matching”. I added the polka dots in my jeans just for fun – they’re so neutral, it’s barely noticeable that I’m technically wearing a 3rd print.

Playful Plaid

As I’ve been going through these style challenge prompts, I’ve noticed that I have a significant imbalance in my wardrobe.  Today’s prompt was playful plaid, and I had to look pretty hard to find something – and I actually really like plaid.  Apparently, I just like polka dots and florals WAY better.  So, when those prompts swing around, I’ll be on top of it.

I liked this outfit because it was fairly simply – I mean, all black.  But, with the mixed patterns of the plaid scarf and polka dot shoes (I just can’t stay away), there was an element of the playfulness the prompt dictated, which the pleats on the bottom of my skirt only enhanced.  I really do enjoy mixing patterns, and when they are the same colors and separated by a long area (like, you know, my entire body), it’s pretty simple.

1 - playfully plaidHow about your closet?  Do you have a lot of different patterns, or do you find yourself drawn to the same types over and over like me?  Or, are you the type of person who tends to stay away from patterns in general and go for the solid color look?  What do you think about plaid and polka dots together?  Let’s chat, and have a great week, everyone!

Pleats a Plenty

As I’m going through these prompts, I’m trying also to get one more use out of my summer clothing before retiring it for the fall/season (and shedding a tear…).  So, I was glad I had a summer pleated skirt for today’s prompt.

If you’ve been following my blog very long, you know I’m not usually very matchy-matchy.  I prefer to do more unexpected things with colors.  However, when you have something that matches as perfectly as this scarf does to the skirt, it’s really hard to pass up.  At least my polka-dot shoes mixed it up a little. 1 - Pleats a plentyHope you’re having a great day!  Let me know what you think about color combinations, polka dot shoes, or anything else you’d like to talk about.   Can’t wait to hear from you!

Two-fer Tuesday: Polka Dot Scarf

Today’s two-fer Tuesday looks are pretty similar: same scarf, same shoes, shorts… But, I like to think they still give completely different impressions.  And if not, whatever.  It’s a new scarf and I really like it!

In the first look, I dressed up my outfit a little with my sparkly blouse and earrings.  But, I was meeting some friends for dinner and didn’t want to look too overdone.  So, I threw on some navy shorts (blues are usually pretty easy to pair together and I didn’t want anything to compete with the scarf), and my cute, but super-hard-to-walk-in striped wedges (polka dots and stripes are my favorite pattern combination), and I was ready to go.
1 - polka dot scarf and navy shortsOutfit two was for a very casual, last-minute first date.  I had also just bought this yellow tee (Dave Ramsey is not happy with me these days), and I love cornflower blue and yellow together.  So, with the help of some white shorts (enough color was already happening), and my now go-to uncomfortable wedges, I was all set.
1 - mustard tee, polka dot scarfWhich of these versions is your favorite?  If you saw me wear these two just a few days apart would you judge me, or are they different enough to make it acceptable?  And isn’t this scarf really just the cutest?  I mean, I need another scarf like I need Georgia to get hotter this summer…but c’mon.  It’s so adorable!

What to Wear: Country Festival

Boho friends, I need help! Or, really, anyone who’s ever been to a music festival, particularly a country one.  I’m going to Shaky Boots this weekend, a big country festival near Atlanta, and I literally have NO idea what to wear.

I’ve been to a billion country concerts, so I know what to wear to those.  But this is all day, and it’s going to be super hot.  Plus, I feel like a festival brings in another element of style expectations.  I want to look cute, but I’m also supposed to be casual and young, wild, and free, right?

Since I’m not really any of those things, I’m at a bit of a loss.  Here are a couple of outfits I wore recently that while not exactly right, might be on the right track.  Maybe.

In this first one, I like two things: shorts and the scarf headband.  Probably not these shorts or this scarf, but the concept works.

1 - shorts, scarf headbandIn this one, I’m in love with the skirt.  It’s got a tribal flavor which seems appropriate for a festival, but the fit and flare still match my personality.  Of course the scarf would not go with me; I’d like to not die of heat stroke.
1 - tribal print skirt, infinity scarfSo, what do you think?  Am I headed in the right direction or way off track?  What would you wear to a music festival?   Let me know soon; I’ve got less than 48 hours to pack, and at this rate, I’ll probably need every single one of those.  Thank you! xoxo
