The Tooth Fairy

Happy Halloween, y’all! I’ve become a big fan of Halloween in my old age. There are many reasons for this:

1) Seeing cute kids costumes on social media is the highlight of my year.

2) Halloween really kicks off the holiday season, with Thanksgiving only 3-4 weeks away, and then Christmas!

3) I LOVE COSTUMES!!!

I may have said this before, but honestly, if I could dress up in costume at least once a month, I’d be a happy camper. As it is, I get one day a year, plus a couple themed parties if I’m lucky. So, I take full advantage of it.

This year’s costume was inspired by Pinterest (per usual) and I put my own spin on this fantastic tooth fairy look:

tooth-fairy-inspoby recycling my tulle skirt from Cinderella 2 years ago:

wpid-photogrid_1414253311902.jpgI thought making the tulle skirt was the extent of my craftiness, but I ramped it up a notch this year, buying my first ever glue gun! I’ll be honest, guys, I was pretty afraid to use this new tool. But, it’s remarkably easy. Like, SUPER easy. And I didn’t even burn myself once.

So, with my new crafting skills, a couple pinterest photos for inspiration, and some spare time, I turned a dollar store crown and wand into something fit for the elegant tooth fairy I was becoming. My wings were also from the dollar store, the toothbrushes for my crown from Big Lots (I spent about 6 dollars total on them), and the shirt from a cheap store in the mall (a back-up, because I broke my cardinal rule about buying things online and ordered a shirt from China….maybe I’ll have it by next Halloween).  So, altogether, I spent less than $20 and had a super fun costume that got rave reviews from children and their mothers alike.

Also, of the 4 other tooth fairies I saw, my costume was the best, if I do say so myself.

1-tooth-fairyDid you dress up this year? Or did your kids? What’s your favorite costume that you have ever worn or seen? Do you purchase your costumes, or are you a DIY-er like me (side note: Halloween is oddly the one time of year I try to be crafty. The rest of the year, I figure I can support the economy by paying other people to make things).

Be safe everyone, and send me cute costume pictures!

What to Wear: NYE Edition

Y’all…I need help.

Tomorrow is New Year’s Eve, which over the past few years has become one of my favorite holidays – in large part because of the sequins.  This year will be my first NYE in Nashville, so I want to do it big!

The biggest party in Nashville is the downtown block party, which this year features Kings of Leon (honestly, I thought their last song was circa 2008, but whatever), Chris Stapleton, Kelsea Ballerini, and others.  The whole street is blocked off, they drop a giant music note (of course), and it’s basically Nashville’s version of the Times Square celebration. So, it’ll likely be wonderful mass chaos.

I’m excited about it, but, predictably, after two weeks of unseasonably warm weather, tomorrow night will be in the mid 20s.  Even crammed together with 1000s of your closest friends, that’s still cold.  Plus, I’ll be standing for hours.

So, what do I wear?  Of course I still want to look cute, and if we go inside anywhere afterwards, I need to have something that looks good under my coat.  But, I feel like I need to be more practical than the sequin skirt, stilettos, and sleeveless top I wanted to wear…

What do you suggest? Has anyone ever gone to an outdoor/cold NYE block party before?  Suggestions?  I’m thinking one of those cute knit headband/ear warmer things (I have one with sequins, so that’s perfect), but beyond that, I’m stumped.

Hurry – we’ve got 24 hours to decide!

Blazers and Rompers

Sometime this week, I’ve got some exciting news to share with you all!  I guess I say that as a teaser, which is pretty annoying now that I think about it.  But, check back and I’ll eventually spill the beans.

In the meantime, here is an outfit I wore recently on a date.  Believe it or not, every once in a while, I do get a date with a non-inmate in Georgia.  However, since his Muslim best friend had been kicked out of the family for getting his Hindu stripper girlfriend pregnant and both of them were now living with him, this guy and I were still not a really good match.

As is often the case in my dating life, there was no second date.  Of course, I was fine with that for a number of reasons, but I can’t help but still feel a little rejection.  I know why I didn’t want to go out with you again, but why didn’t you want to go out with me?

I guess I’ll never know, but I’m pretty sure it wasn’t the outfit, because this is one of my new favorites (that honestly I may never wear again because I like being original with my date attire).  But, it’s cute, right?

A great way to transition some summer clothes into fall is to add a jacket.  It keeps you warm, obviously, but also tones down the summery feel, in this case, of my coral, lace romper.  I don’t have a ton of fall dresses – most of mine are very obviously summer, or wool – so, the romper was a playful alternative.

1 - lace romper, blazerWhat do you think about my date night look?  A win or a definite reason he never asked me out again?  And do you feel a little bad too when someone you didn’t like doesn’t ask you out again, or is that an issue I just personally need to work on?  Let’s talk dating lives, cute outfits, guesses at my surprise news…anything you want to share, I’m all ears!

Burgundy and Blush

During the month of September, I’m doing another style challenge on Instagram.  I like these for a few reasons:

  1. They challenge/direct my outfit picking every day.
  2. They allow me to gain more followers/friends.
  3. The potential prizes are awesome…

So, if you don’t already follow me on IG, feel free to do so now.  I’d love to connect with you @tastefullytrendysb!

My goal is to stay about a day ahead of the prompts with my blogs…then I can post on instagram with the intention of driving people back to my blog.  I know it won’t totally work as I’d planned, but I’m going to try it, anyway.

The prompt for September 1 is Burgundy and Blush.  We’re free to interpret these prompts however we’d like, but I took this one quite literally, by combining my burgundy harem pants with a pink and white striped blouse and pink pumps.

I like the tailored look of the blouse with the more free-spirited pants.  The shoes help give me height (so much blousy-ness could look quite frumpy on my short frame if I didn’t throw in some illusion), and also keep the look more on the professional than whimsical side.  Color-blocking from a years ago has been giving way over the past year or two to a more mono-chromatic look, so this outfit is more in line with that trend.

1 - Burgundy and blushWhat do you think of the monochromatic look – mine specifically, or the trend generally?  Do you miss color-blocking or appreciate the simplicity of sticking with one color?  Have you ever done a style (or similar) challenge on Instagram?  If not, want to join me – or just follow along?  Let’s talk!
