Preds Pride!

I need to learn hockey lingo, because y’all, Nashville is a hockey town, and our Predators are on fire!

I freely admit that I am a bandwagon fan. In my defense, though, I’ve never followed a hockey team before, except the US in the Olympics, and I think it’s perfectly acceptable to jump on the bandwagon of your home-town team.

So, disclaimer out of the way, since my boys are in the final games of the Western Conference Finals – just one or two steps away from the Stanley Cup games! – I figured I should go buy a t-shirt. Since I waited until the Western Conference Finals, though, the choices were a little limited…

After striking out at Target and one Walmart, I headed to a 2nd Walmart and ended up in the kids section. While I don’t normally like how kids’ shirts fit, since I am not, you know, a 14 year old boy…I did like the $12.88 price tag. And, I liked it even better when I got to the checkout counter and it rang up as $1!

I asked twice if that was the correct price, because honestly, even on clearance, how could it be one dollar? But, it was, and so for that, I could make anything work.

And, make it work I did by cutting a v-neck into the shirt to give it a more modern, feminine, less little boy look, and pairing it with striped pants and a jacket because I wanted to show my (newfound) pride at work. I swapped out the jacket and pants for shorts later, when I went to watch the game in the park, surrounded by 1000s of my closest friends. And food trucks, because this is Nashville!

Unfortunately, we lost that game in overtime, but it was a great evening nevertheless, and I’m sure this $1 purchase will be used many times over in the coming days/weeks and future seasons.

And now with the jacket…
Go Preds! Pluck the Ducks! Smashville! (That’s all I’ve got…)

Take Me out to the Ballgame

I was out of town last week which always puts me way behind in my blog writing. But, y’all, I was in Utah for work and it was GORGEOUS! I wouldn’t last living there: cold and outdoorsy. But, it was so pretty!

Also, ALL THE TULIPS!!!!

I wanted to cry every time I stepped outside, it was all so beautiful. Seriously.

Anyway, prior to that trip, I went on a date. It was the Saturday before Easter – you know, the Sunday where I needed to leave my house by 7:15 to be at church for 5 hours – so, I probably shouldn’t have gone out. But, how do you resist an invitation to a baseball game? It’s my favorite kind of date!

Except for the clothes…casual clothes are REALLY hard for me. Well, I should say, casual clothes when you want to impress someone are really hard for me. I don’t like wearing flats on dates; I’m short enough as it is. I also prefer to wear rompers or dresses for warm-weather dates. But, obviously, at a baseball game, I can’t look like I’m trying too hard (although, as I was soon to learn, at Nashville baseball games, no one watches the games. I could have worn a romper with wedges and been quite at home with many of the other girls who just walked around the stadium and hung out at the trendy bar past left field.)

So, I settled on this: casual shorts, a t-shirt (but at least a cute one with a ballet back), and floral flats because it’s too early for straight up sandals. Maybe not my best date outfit, but it worked and got me out the door (I was, naturally, running late. I blame it on the casual clothes).

What would you wear to a baseball game – either, normally, or on a date? I feel like my answers to that question would be different depending on the circumstances; maybe yours are, too. Give me some ideas for next time, please!!

Two-fer Tuesday: Jailhouse Stripes

It’s been a while since I’ve done a twofer Tuesday, but no time like the present!

I really like these jailhouse stripes (or maybe more accurately, train conductor – they’re probably too narrow for jailhouse). Regardless, I think these highwaisted, cropped striped jeans are the best.

However, I wasn’t sure about them when I bought them, because in the artificial light of the dressing room, they really played with your eyes. I mean, in general, I try to wear clothes that don’t make people want to look the other way.

In the natural light, though, they seem to be okay, so I think I’m good. Except the camera doesn’t love them, either…you might have to zoom in pretty close to get an accurate look. Oh well.

In this first look, I’m combining another one of my favorite spring trends – off-the-shoulder – with my cute pants and some flats that actually hurt my feet more than most of the heels I own, but they’re so cute and universally functional, that I keep them. I ran some errands on Saturday in this outfit, then popped on some black heels for dinner with a friend that night.

Oh, and let’s not forget to mention my pink lipstick; as much as I enjoyed the dark berrys and browns this winter, I’m seriously so happy bright is back in season!

Next up is another casual outfit (I did wear it to work, but in hindsight, it might have been TOO casual). Anyway, a simple soft turquoise tee (you’ll have to take my word for it being that color, I guess), with a black scarf (I don’t have a cat; that’s all just my hair…) and some silver accents to complete the look. Easy, but still put together. Scarves are helpful in that way.
So there you have it – the return of Twofer Tuesday, thanks to my new favorite cropped jeans.

Which of these looks would you rather wear? And what’s the verdict on these stripes – delightful or dizzying? Let’s talk!

Spring Forward!

Spring is finally here in Nashville, and there was no rain this weekend – you wouldn’t believe the impact this good weather had on my mood! I’ve never thought I had seasonal depression, but I’m starting to think I might have a little bit of it, because honestly, I felt SO MUCH BETTER in the sun this weekend.

Also, I have a lot of cute new clothes to wear in said sunshine, which definitely doesn’t hurt.

That smile is because of the glare on my face – sunshine!!!

Really, my favorite thing about this outfit is the back of my shirt. Apparently, “ballet backs” are in now, and I like it! I bought this top in 2 colors, because why not?

Cute, right? It’s just enough to take an otherwise standard t-shirt and turn into something unique and fresh.

Springtime also brings bright lipstick again. Hot pink, I’ve missed you so!

What fashion/makeup trends are you most excited about this spring?

J’adore Paris

Happy Friday, y’all! Look at that – I made it through a full week with regular blogs! I consider this a significant accomplishment, and one that I hope I can maintain.

Pretty much all of my wardrobe these days is from Target and Old Navy. Maybe that’s why I’m feeling stifled – as cute as those two stores’ clothes can be, I might need to branch out a little.

Until then, here is an outfit brought to you by both of my favorites. My Target jeans are a familiar staple, but the shirt from Old Navy is new. I almost paid full price for it, too, which is a ridiculous thing to do at Old Navy where they have a new sale every two days. But, graphic tees tend to sell out so quickly, and I’m pretty picky about what my t-shirts say, so I felt I needed to snap it up.

Cute, right? I was a French major, so a pun on the Eiffel tower is right up my alley (if the middle print is too small to read, it says, “Eiffel in love with Paris.”) J’adore.

Fortunately for me, Old Navy was having a 40% off everything if you use your Old Navy card. Fortunately for Old Navy, that was enough incentive for me to open one. I figured I shop there enough it’d be worth it for the sales. And, I’ve already earned $30 in Old Navy points or whatever, just by using it outside of their brand one time…so, hopefully the potential negative to my credit score will pay off. Just don’t tell Dave Ramsey.

Here’s the full, casual outfit. Honestly, probably not the most flattering shirt I own, but sometimes, you have to go with what makes you happy (including a twisted choker that bugs me, but I obviously can’t do anything about it now).

Do you have any graphic tees that you really like? What do they say? And what are the stores that you just can’t stay away from – do they define your style like Target and Old Navy have begun to do for me, or are they your favorites for another reason?

Have a great weekend, friends!

Berry Kiss

One of my favorite trends right now is dark lipstick. I’m not bold enough to go REALLY dark (yet, anyway), and I might be too fair to pull it off without looking total vintage goth. But I’m really into a good berry – especially when it matches my shirt PERFECTLY.

This outfit is a great example of how to take something really casual – a t-shirt (that I wear all the time, btw, because it is so comfortable!) and jeans – and spice it up a little with very minimal effort. All I did was add a scarf (tied at the ends to make it a faux infinity scarf) and a choker, some booties, and I was chic and on-trend, but comfortable enough to run errands or whatever else.

1-butterfly-scarf-choker-polka-dot-jeansAlso, not pictured are my earrings because, well, I forgot to take a picture of them.

Do you like to dress up your casual wear? What are some of your go-to outfit boosters?

(Oh, and total bonus points if you know what movie this post’s title is taken from!)

Totally Turtleneck?

If you follow me on my new/additional Instagram account (Tastefully Trendy!), then you probably know I’m doing a style challenge again! I’ve done these in the past, and they’re a great way to stretch my creative muscles, as well as to meet other fashion lovers.

Today’s prompt is Totally Turtleneck, which was tricky for me, since I don’t a) wear turtlenecks, or b)have anything with turtles on it…  So, I’m choosing to focus on the “neck” part, and wear an outfit that has a lot happening around my neck.

dsc_0011I’ve talked a lot (probably ad nauseum, at this point) about my love for chokers. Well, one of my favorite things about the current version of the trend is layering. Whether I combine it with a longer necklace(s), or add a scarf as pictured here, my choker usually has a friend. I’ve never been what you might call a minimalist…so this trend works out great for me. 1-blanket-scarf-and-chokerHow do you feel about layering your chokers? Is too much of a good thing, a good thing, or are you of the less-is-more camp? Also, how would you interpret “Totally Turtleneck”? Am I the only short-necked person not wearing these??

New Cities

Hey guys! This may be the only post I have time to write this week (and by may, I really mean 100% certainly will), but I wanted to say hi! The past two weeks have been so crazy with Labor Day travels, leaving a job, starting a new one, etc., but everything is going well. I feel very much back in my element in my new position, and I’m continually so grateful that God placed me in Nashville, the perfect city.

A friend of mine recently moved to another city, after giving Nashville a go for about 2 years. Why in the WORLD she didn’t absolutely love it here is beyond me, but she spent the past two years being miserable, much like I did in Georgia. Now that she’s been in her new home for all of about 3 days, she’s already making friends, taking in beautiful sunsets, exploring, and generally loving life. The dramatic shift in her circumstances and outlook is so similar to what I experienced when I moved to Nashville last October, that I can’t help but be excited for her to have finally found “home”. Sometimes, you’ve just got to find where you belong, even if that means taking a scary step in faith into the great unknown.

The point of my story is two-fold: one, it’s so important to not let fear hold you back from stepping out into something new. You just don’t know what will be on the other side, and it might be the very thing you’ve been hoping and praying for.

And two, joy really does come in the morning. I’m so grateful that God moves us in and out of seasons. Yes, the hard ones are important – for character building, if nothing else. But, there are also good ones on the horizon. So, if you’re in your own version of Georgia, don’t give up. Keeping moving forward, keep stepping out in faith, and one day soon, you’ll suddenly wake up and realize you’re in a new, beautiful, wonderful place that even 10 months later, still feels like a surreal vacation sometimes.

This outfit has nothing to do with any of that – or with much of anything else, for that matter. But, I like it, and my makeup game was on point that morning.

So, have a great rest of your week, everyone, and keep pressing on to the good!

Twofer Tuesday: The Kimono

One of my favorite pieces in my closet right now is my multi-colored kimono. There are certain types of clothing I’m very particular about: maxi dresses, yoga pants, floral rompers… I’m picky about patterns and color combinations – and about looking too generic. Kimonos are another one of those items. Despite how trendy they are, I only own one because I’ve only ever seen one I thought was worthy of purchase. But, what a good purchase it was!

Below I’ve styled it two different ways. The first is a business casual look, appropriate for most offices, I’d say. The second is an outfit I wore to church which was decidedly inappropriate…but, I wear a long, shapeless green choir robe on Sunday mornings, so I push the envelope with what goes underneath.

How do you feel about kimonos? Would you wear one this bold? What’s your favorite way to style them? I’d love to hear your ideas!

Plain White T’s

I’m seldom accused of being simple, at least when it comes to my clothes. I just wouldn’t have any fun if I had a go-to uniform (no judgment if that’s you – it’s certainly easier! It’s just not me). But…every now and then I get the urge to just strip things down to a t-shirt and jeans. Of course, I pair that with bright red lipstick and shoes with cherries on them. It’s the best I can do.

And that’s about all I have to say about this look. So, maybe simple isn’t so bad!
