IBTLALC, pt. 3

Round 3 of “all dressed up with nowhere to go” brings me to my favorite type of gown – the formal one.  You’ll notice I’m wearing a fake engagement ring.  That’s because I’m beginning to think both black tie party invitations and marriage proposals are mythical creatures, so while I’m pretending, I might as well shoot for the moon.
1 - navy formalBelieve it or not, I’ve never actually worn this gown.  My mom picked it up somewhere – probably a thrift store – and kept it for a special occasion.  I inherited it to keep for my own special occasion when I tried it on and it somehow fit like a glove.  I really love its simplicity – as much as I adore sequins, there is something so elegant about a beautiful, rich, solid-colored fabric in a flattering cut.  (But, don’t be fooled – my shoes still have sequins.  You can take the girl out of the bling, but you can’t take the bling out of the girl.)

For my makeup, I wanted to do a contrasting lip to really make a statement, since the rest of my look (sequin shoes notwithstanding) is pretty understated.  My red lipstick was perfect for the occasion, coupled with a subdued neutral eye to keep from looking like a clown.

Thus concludes my study on holiday attire.  But, that is not where the conversation ends!  I want to hear all about your parties – and more importantly, your party clothes!  Write soon, send pictures! xoxo!

It’s Beginning to Look a lot Like Christmas, pt. 1

Last week, I told you guys I had some surprises for this week, and I didn’t lie.  First, yesterday’s post was pretty fun, right?  (This is when you agree with me, regardless of your personal opinions).

Well, the next three days are going to be even more fun, because we’re going to Christmas parties!  And by we, I mean you so that I can live vicariously.  My social calendar in Georgia has a few more holes in it than it did in Virginia Beach, and I have no fancy parties to attend this year.  What I do have, though, is fancy dresses!  So, this past weekend, I pretended I was going to parties, planned out three totally different looks – complete with hair and make-up changes – and had a grand old time.

If you’re looking for something to wear for your parties, allow me to make some recommendations.

First up, the trendy Christmas party.  This is the party with your hipster friends, the office party if you work in marketing and the party is at a loft bar in the gentrified part of town, or any sort of holiday cocktail party (would also work for NYE).

1 - trendy party dressYou can also wear this dress to hang out with your brand snob friends and let them know it’s Kate Spade, omitting the fact that you bought it at Marshall’s for $30.

All you need for this party is a cute little mod dress with trendy booties.  Add some sparkle (because, Christmas), and you’re ready to go!

I wanted to show you my makeup too, just because I think makeup is super fun. But, capturing the colors accurately, while also not making an expression too embarrassing for public display, is not as easy as one might think.  So, this is the best we have.  I went for a mostly monochromatic look – pink eyeshadows (cream and powder), burgundy liner, and raisin (maybe more like Craisin) lipstick.  And here is the bathroom selfie:

Let’s do the polka!

Few things say spring as clearly and adorably as polka dots. Always in style, polka dots are really having a moment right now, particularly on more unexpected items – like jeans.  I incorporated the trend by adding a polka dot belt (which is actually reversible and black on the other side.  I’m easily impressed) to my silky dress-turned-top and my favorite blue jeans-that-I-pretend-aren’t, for a more casual office look.  To keep from looking too casual, though, I made sure to add a dressy statement necklace and some patent wedges.  And of course, some funky rings, because nothing says responsible adult like wearing large pieces of plastic on your finger.

Dress/top: JCPenney before I was mad at them
Pants: gift from Kohl’s
Shoes: Payless
Belt: Charming Charlie
Necklace: gift
Bracelet: gift
Rings: H&M
